Our Story

The key to Buffet des Continents’ success rests on its continued commitment to offering its customers a wide variety of dishes prepared every day using the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, outstanding service, and an environment that is uniquely attractive, warm, clean and friendly.

Buffet des Continents is successful because of the perfect mix of responsible, professional management and the presence in each restaurant of a co-owner who is an expert in the restaurant business and makes sure that the service provided to our customers is of the highest quality at all times. Buffet des Continents’ primary objectives are to, provide an enjoyable and satisfying experience to its customers, offer them a variety of freshly prepared dishes made with the finest ingredients, reinvent its menus regularly, promote thematic culinary events and remain involved in the community.

Such was the spirit in which Buffet des Continents opened its first restaurant in Charlesbourg, near Quebec City, in 1995. At the time, it offered a traditional buffet featuring international and Chinese dishes. In 1999, the formula was revisited, and the restaurant became a high-end buffet offering favourite dishes inspired from the four corners of the world. Building on the success of this first restaurant, the concept was expanded.

In 2003, a second location was opened in Trois-Rivières. It boasted an exotic decor in an outstanding setting, with food preparation stations set up directly in the dining room. Customers were able to observe the chefs at work, and to appreciate first-hand the quality and freshness of the ingredients, the dynamic energy of the chefs and the cleanliness of the cooking areas. Customers could order pasta dishes made to their specifications or observe the chefs making pizzas and pastries right before their eyes. The success of this new concept quickly grew.

The chain continued its expansion in 2004, this time opening a restaurant in Sherbrooke, using the same exotic theme in a remarkable setting, and adding a replica of the Arc de Triomphe right in the middle of the restaurant. Once again, the primary focus was to enhance the customer experience, with more live cooking stations set up in the dining room, and new à la carte menus that included fajitas, pastas, stir fries and flambéed dishes, all prepared right in front of the customer.

In 2007, Buffet des Continents opened its location in Gatineau, adding a tropical forest and a suspension bridge to its exotic setting. The number of live cooking stations increased, and diners could watch the chefs in action as they prepared their dishes.

In 2010, the Montréal region got its own Buffet des Continents in Mascouche, with a seating capacity of 850 people in a spectacular and unique setting that includes a replica of the base of the Eiffel Tower.

Buffet des Continents continued its expansion in 2014 with a new location in Saint-Jérôme along the Laurentian Autoroute (Hwy. 15). This sixth restaurant is one of the largest in the chain, offering an even more spectacular setting, an immense mezzanine and a terrace on the second floor.

Two years later the chain continued its expansion with the opening of a new location in Drummondville. Having a seating capacity of 700 guests, this restaurant features a dining space overlooked by a magnificent interior mezzanine and a spectacular décor that includes a replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Less than a year later, Buffet des Continents launched its eighth restaurant, this time in Brossard. In 2017, the chain also began construction of a ninth establishment, which is scheduled to open in Lévis for Spring 2018.

Social Responsibility

Buffet des Continents’ commitment, as well as that of its staff, extends beyond its restaurants into the communities it serves where they constantly support local charities and social, sports and community events.

This tradition of social responsibility reflects the values of the entire chain, its owners and its employees. In addition to supporting many charitable organizations throughout the year, Buffet des Continents also supports numerous community, social and sports associations. It also proudly organizes, an annual event to honour community volunteers, a family day and a non-perishable food drive during the holiday season.

Buffet des Continents has held its non-perishable food drive every first Monday of December since 2004. Over the last 13 years, more than 77,000 people have eaten for free at our tables, donating over 384,000 pounds of food items.

Each year, the non-perishable food items donated during the drive are delivered to various organizations known for distributing food and goods to families and individuals in need.

Every year in April, as part of Volunteer Week, the chain organizes an event in each of its restaurants to honour volunteers in every region for their outstanding service to the community. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the social engagement and selflessness of those individuals who, thanks to their commitment and sacrifice, contribute to the success of an important sector of our modern society by organizing social, community and sports activities not only for youth, adults and seniors in our communities, but also for the disabled and disadvantaged. Buffet des Continents also provides free food to the volunteers who contribute their time to various social and sports activities throughout the year.

Family Day is organized with a single objective in mind … to celebrate family! Based on a fun fair theme, the event includes outdoor inflatable games, clowns, performers, make-up artists, entertainment and music. This free all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-play family event, held in friendly surroundings, is appreciated by all who attend. Celebrating the importance of family goes hand in hand with Buffet des Continent’s philosophy. We strive to help families by offering a wide selection of quality dishes at a reasonable price. That is why every child twelve years of age and under eats for free when accompanied by a parent, except on Saturdays when the buffet is half price for such children. Children under the age of four always eat for free.

Families also include seniors. Celebrated every year on October 1, National Seniors Day is an opportunity for older people to enjoy a free lunch in exchange for making a donation to regional senior aid organizations that work collaboratively with the FADOQ (Quebec federation of senior citizens). Over the past two years, aid agencies have received $56,705 in such donations.

Buffet des Continents also sells gift certificates throughout the year of which, part of the proceeds helps to provide financial support to various foundations run by our regional hospitals.

In addition, Buffet des Continents restaurants have an agreement with local fire departments to ensure that fire victims receive free meals at the restaurant during the transition period. Thanks to our all-you-can-eat formula and the size of our restaurants, it’s an easy thing for us to do and we are always happy to support those in need.

In Gatineau, in partnership with La Soupière de l’Amitié de Gatineau, the restaurant collects the food that hasn’t been served by the end of the day and distributes it free to people in need in the region. A rigorous control process ensures that the quality of the food remains at its highest, that health and hygiene regulations are respected, and that food safety regulations governing the transportation, storage and serving processes are complied with. La Soupière de l’Amitié offers emergency food services and is also a point of social reintegration for individuals who are trying to get their lives back on track.

Buffet des Continents continues to develop these same types of partnerships with organizations in every community in which we are present. The success of each of our restaurants is proudly and dutifully shared. It has a direct impact on the communities we serve, by helping and supporting families, people living alone and children in need.

We received the Company of the Year Award in 2011 (COUP DE COEUR) and the “Entreprise COUP DE POUCE” Award (for community involvement), presented by the Quebec Chamber of Commerce.
